The Bophuthatswana National Development Corporation was incorporated in terms of Act 46 of 1968 and Proclamation 172 of 1975. It was owned by the Republic of Bophuthatswana as its economic development agency. The mission of the BNDC was to contribute towards the improvement of the quality of life in Bophuthatswana by developing Industry, Commerce, Small Business and Human Resources.

After the Democracy came into being, the North West Development Corporation Limited Act, 1995 (Act No 6 of 1995) was approved by the Provincial Legislature and published in the North West Provincial Gazette, Vol 2, Notice 28 of 08/09/1995.

The North West Provincial Government has recognized the need for continuance of the Bophuthatswana National Development Corporation Limited as a development corporation for the North West Province. The corporation was identified as being instrumental in the success of the reconstruction and development program in the North West Province.

The aim and objectives of the corporation shall be to plan, finance, co-ordinate, promote and carry out the economic development of the province and its people in the field industry, commerce, finance, mining and other business, resulting in wealth and job creation.

The Bophuthatswana National Development Corporation Limited, initially established under Promotion of the Economic Development of Bantu Homelands Act, 1968 (Act 46 of 1968) and thereafter dealt with under the Bophuthatswana National Development Corporation Limited Act, 1993 (Act 37 of 1993) shall, notwithstanding the repeal of the last mentioned Act by this Act, continue to exist and operate as a body corporate under the name of North West Development Corporation Limited and shall be deemed to have been established under this Act.

From and after the commencement of this Act and subject to the provision thereof, the Corporation was controlled and represented by the North West Development Corporation Board of Directors as hereinafter provided, and all that Board shall be deemed to be acts of the corporation.

NWDC was converted into a Private Company on 03 February 1999. this resulted in the placing of NWDC (Pty) Ltd under judicial management.

Strategic Environment

Post the period of judicial management (28 April 2005- 31 March 2006) the NWDC responded to the challenge of realigning its business, objectives and management ethos towards the strategic objectives of the Government of the North West Province. This alignment to the strategic objectives of the Provincial Growth and Development Strategy, created significant development opportunities for the North West Province, through the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, has committed R6 million towards SMME start-up, R30 million towards industrial property maintenance and refurbishment, and R30 million towards the construction of new light industrial rental facilities.

The NWDC is ideally positioned to further the objectives of the Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative of South Africa (ASGISA) within the Manufacturing and Trade sectors of the Northwest Province, insofar that EXCO has resolved in 2006 that the NWDC (Pty) Ltd footprint all over the North West Province, together with its policies, systems, and procedures, ideally qualify the NWDC (Pty) Ltd to implement the ASGISA projects within the North West Province.

Operational Business

The first year post judicial Management saw new policies and procedures approved. These policies and procedures were required to ensure good Governance, enable segregation of duties, allow for delegation of responsibilities, and increase the operational efficiency of the NWDC (Pty) Ltd. The NWDC (Pty) Ltd funded its entire expenditure for both, capital refurbishment and operations, from cash generated by its operations.

Nature of Business

The NWDC (Pty) Ltd has primarily been assigned the responsibilities for implementation of manufacturing and commercial strategies of the Government of the North West Province. An emphasis is placed on the establishment of financial viable entrepreneurs as a precondition for job creation and NWDC (Pty) Ltd sustainability.

  • Providing infrastructure for industrial and commercial development;
  • Building factories and shopping complexes;
  • Conceptualize and facilitate investment into new large and small scale businesses;
  • Enhance productive entrepreneurial activities to create and maintain permanent jobs
  • Lowering the cost of doing business in the North West Province and,
  • Managing ASGISA

The North West Development Corporation (Pty) Ltd is a great organization with competent and dedicated staff, and as such is an indispensable tool in the hands of the Government of the North West Province for facilitating economic growth and job creation in the manufacturing and retail sector.
