Cathy Magengelele has a passion for wool and a special gift for crafting phenomenal beanies in a matter of minutes.

Her passion led her to register and open her business,  Catrue Di’ Zainz, in 2016.

Situated in Ganyesa in the Dr Ruth Mompati District of the North West, Cathy designs fashion and crochets beanies by hand. She uses bold, vibrant colours that match the fashion trends of every season. Her target market is anyone who loves being fashionable or would like to keep warm in winter.

The business idea came when Cathy was crocheting beanies for herself to match outfits. Today she has mastered the skill to such perfection that she can crochet a beanie from start to finish under an hour. Apart from being available in a wide variety of trendy colours, her woollen beanies are set apart by their durability and warmth, thanks to good quality wool.

Cathy has established as many as 25 distributors across the North West Province. Thanks to the convenience of counter-to-counter courier services such as Paxi, she delivers to her customers anywhere in South Africa. Orders can be made directly through her WhatsApp business account and shipped to customers.

Wool shortages during winter and delivery delays of her raw materials are challenges that she is actively working on overcoming. As this dynamic businesswoman remarks, “Always be prepared to be a leader. Start something and let everyone else follow.”

Cathy has also diversified her online store to include trendy headbands and bright fashion lipstick.

It is Cathy’s ambition to grow her brand by selling her products at social winter markets across the country and to expand beyond South Africa’s borders.
