However, a Samuel Sebego bespoke ottoman is surely an item to covet for those individuals and establishments who wish to own more than just a side table, but rather a conversation piece.
Made from recycled speaker frames, Take No Time Upholstery, as Samuel’s company is known creates ottoman side tables and blue tooth speakers. Each of his pieces captures the African vibrancy as their surfaces range from nguni hides to traditional cloths, some even exchangeable to suit a certain style or event.
Samuel hails from Reagile, Koster where as a child, he already discovered he had the gift of creativity and making all sorts of things. Yet it was an untimely retrenchment that led Samuel to the creation of the ottoman side tables. His love for music and hobby as an event DJ made him realise the value of repurposing old speaker frames. This led to the registration of Take No Time Upholstery as a business in 2018.
Samuel prides himself in the exceptional durability and strength of the ottomans, and that his products are fully customisable according to clients’ specifications – from the size to the upholstery. They could even be fitted with a bluetooth speaker and additional removable covers.
In 2022, Samual was crowned as a category winner in the National Craft Awards sponsored by The Department of Sport, Arts & Culture to encourage and stimulate creativity and innovation in the craft sector. In addition, his ottomans have been included in the Beautiful Things exhibition, showcasing the finest craft pieces, linked to an online e-commerce platform, as well as Decorex Expo.
Samuel’s upholstery business also specialises in furniture and upholstery repair, as well as offering a cleaning service for couches.
Looking towards the future, Samuel’s goal is to move to a larger manufacturing site with a showroom for the public to view his products. Supplying to upmarket lodges, hotels or corporates is his aim, while also wishing to participate in more trade shows and enter the export market.
“As I look back on my life, I realise that age does not matter. One can still achieve new things, even later in life”, says Samuel.
