Keep Mahikeng Clean Campaign
On the 17th of July 2012, the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) in partnership with Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality embarked on a cleaning campaign as part of the 67 minutes for Mandela activism. The campaign was themed ‘’Keep Mahikeng clean’’ as a response to the growing concern by both provincial government and the local community. The campaign, led by the MEC of the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism, Motlalepule Rosho, Mayor of Ngaka Modiri Molema district municipality, Phaladi Saku, went underway as all the related stakeholders gathered at Montshioa Stadium where the task teams were to be segregated to tackle various refuse hot spots. The illegal dumping hot spots identified and to be tackled, were certain areas around Montshioa stadium, Lokaleng, Ext 38, Ext 39 as well as some certain areas around Golfview and Riviera Park.” The North West Development Corporation assisted the initiative by supplying hats for the task teams, bottled water, refuse bags as well as two bakkies. The Corporation’s acting CEO, Mike Mthimunye, was also present at the campaign to give a helping hand. Mahikeng is not only the capital of the province, but it is a home to many of us. We further appeal to the residents of this city to use the new rubbish skips that we have provided, collecting refuse in a well coordinated manner. Furthermore, the responsibility of refuse disposal should be everybody’s business in Mahikeng from now on, “I believe that this would be the best present that we could offer to Tata Mandela” said councilor Saku when addressing the volunteers assembled at the stadium.
Feel at home disability centre
As part of the day’s social pledges the NWDC and DEDECT team, lead by the NWDC’s Acting CEO, visited the Feel at Home Disability centre in Montshiwa. The institution was set up to educate and train children with disabilities, in the aim that they will one day be able to fend for themselves and obtain an income. The centre currently has 26 learners ranging from toddlers to teenagers. The staff volunteer their services to the centre and are not funded by any government programme as of yet.
The NWDC will be embarking on a project whereby the building will be undergoing some renovations. The first priority is to set up ablution facilities, thereafter we will also be re-tiling the interior as well as refurbishing parts of the exterior. We are extremely excited to be assisting in this honorable cause. There is no greater achievement than being able to see these learners taught under the optimum circumstances and we at the NWDC be given the opportunity to make it a reality.
