Cleaning the capital city of the North West Province was the order of the day on Monday the 17th May 2010. Premier Maureen Modiselle led a massive cleaning campaign which took place in and around Mafikeng and Mmabatho, in partnership with the Mafikeng Local and Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipalities. The aim of the campaign was to encourage the residents of Mafikeng to keep their city tidy and discourage any form of littering. It was decided that each Government Department should bring at least 100 staff members to aid in the cleaning campaign. The Department of Economic Development and Tourism as well as its agencies adhered to this request by sending the specified amount of employees to assist. The breakdown was as follows: 60 staff members from the department, 25 from the NWDC, 3 from MIDZ, 5 from the gambling board, and the rest consisted of public safety personnel.
The campaign commenced at 08H30 behind the Choppies Centre in the Mafikeng CBD and was officially launched by Premier Maureen Modiselle and MEC. M.W. Matsemela (Department of Economic Development and Tourism). Both the Premier as well as the MEC addressed the crowd and gave an exemplary motive as to why we need to keep our world a cleaner place. The premier acknowledged the appalling state of Mafikeng and appealed to each individual to start making a difference wherever possible.
The personnel involved in the campaign were then split into four groups, where each group would embark upon cleaning a certain area. The MEC and Premier showed no hesitation, picked up a pair of gloves and a refuse bag, and joined a group. The groups were concentrated in and around Riviera Park, Golf View and Mafikeng CBD. The NWDC was proud to assist in this outstanding initiative. And in the spirit of a cleaner Mafikeng, had not only assigned employees to assist, but also designated a truck and a bakkie to help dispose of all refuse.
The cleanup operation was a great success and lasted till around 12H30, where all groups convened back at the starting point. The MEC thanked all staff who assisted, and was hopeful that we can make a difference and eventually see a dirt-free capital city. The NWDC also appeals to all residents of Mafikeng to take it upon themselves to avoid littering and strive for a cleaner, more attractive City for all.
