The establishment of the Mahikeng Trade Market is well underway, with the contractor company officially appointed in February 2023 following due procurement processes.
As a result, contractor Thavhani Trading Enterprise was formally granted access to NWDC Stand 3290, Mahikeng Industrial Area, where refurbishment of the existing structures will commence.
Thavhani Trading Enterprise is a local company from Mahikeng, founded in 2009. The company is 100% black-owned with the core business of civil and building construction.
The development of the Mahikeng Trade Market aims to create a space for SMMEs to manufacture durable and semi-durable goods for direct sale to clients and retailers alike. The Mahikeng Trade Market will provide an enabling environment by offering both hard and soft infrastructure for SMMEs that operate within the manufacturing industry.
The Mahikeng Trade Market will act as a facility where SMMEs can access public support programmes such as those offered by SEDA and DSBD. The Mahikeng Trade Market’s operational expenditure and maintenance will be funded by the rental income charged to SMMEs.
It is envisaged that the Mahikeng Trade Market will consist of a maximum of 22 manufacturing units rented to SMMEs, with an administrative support office on site.
The Mahikeng Trade Market is a multi-stakeholder-driven project, supported by:
• The National Department of Small Business Development (DSBD)
• The North West Provincial Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation, and Tourism (DEDECT)
• Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality
• Mahikeng Local Municipality
• North West Development Corporation (NWDC); and
• Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA)
As the Mahikeng Trade Market project develops and the site renovations reach completion, more information regarding the selection of SMME manufacturer traders and the operation of the market will become available.
