Lighting The Path To Opportunity In Rural South Africa
In the heart of Lehurutshe, within the Mmabana Centre, a quiet revolution in education is taking shape. This movement is not characterised by noise, but rather by information, technology, and an unwavering commitment to empowering young people.
At the forefront of this initiative is a visionary who recognised the gap and took action to bridge it.
UniAppSA, founded in 2014 by the determined and forward-thinking Lefale Legotlo, has emerged as one of South Africa’s most inspiring youth-led organisations focused on enhancing access to education. What began as a simple realisation—that rural learners were being overlooked—has blossomed into a powerful movement poised to shape the future.
Where Vision Meets Purpose
After graduating from the University of Johannesburg, Lefale returned home to face a difficult reality: rural and township learners struggled with career decisions due to limited guidance, reduced access to technology, and little support in navigating the complex world of tertiary applications.
He observed learners choosing courses that were becoming outdated, young people qualifying for industries with shrinking prospects, and many individuals falling into unemployment — not because of a lack of potential, but due to a lack of proper alignment.
UniAppSA Was Created To Tackle This Challenge
Alongside co-director Katlego Matladi, the organisation has built an ecosystem to democratise opportunities for every learner, regardless of their background. Today, UniAppSA is more than just a business; it serves as a vital lifeline.

Few organisations in rural South Africa can demonstrate such a consistent and verified impact.
What is UniAppSA’s greatest strength?
They venture where others do not. They recognise that in many rural areas:
- Data is costly
- Transport is unreliable
- Career awareness is limited
- Digital adoption is slow
- Funding is scarce
Instead of seeing these as barriers, UniAppSA views them as opportunities for innovation. Through a hybrid model of digital and face-to-face services, community radio partnerships, and grassroots campaigns, they engage young people where they are and uplift them.
Looking Ahead: A Future Powered by Innovation
UniAppSA is on a mission to become the nation’s leading education access and placement platform—and they are well-placed for success. Their ambitions are bold and transformative.
Short-Term Goals
- Develop a data-free mobile app
- Expand district-wide roadshows
- Organize the 4th District Education Expo
- Strengthen corporate brand collaborations
Medium-Term Goals
- Create a UniAppSA Innovation Hub for 4IR skills, digital literacy, and youth entrepreneurship
Long-Term Goals
- Establish South Africa’s centralised national career planning office
- Expand throughout the SADC region

This is not merely a dream; it is a route to guidance.
