To be able to accommodate traders at the Mahikeng Trade Market site, the existing buildings at NWDC Stand 3290 in the Mahikeng Industrial Area will be refurbished by a reputable contractor to house the envisaged manufacturing units.
A tender (NWDC/SBD003/2022) has been advertised in print media and on the NWDC website, with the closing date for bids set at 15 November 2022.
The upgrade of the site will entail alterations, electrical work, external work (paving, roadworks etc.) external plumbing and drainage.
The Mahikeng Trade Market is a multi-stakeholder-driven project, supported by:
It is envisaged that the Mahikeng Trade Market will consist of a maximum of 22 manufacturing units that will be rented to SMMEs at a minimal fee. This is part of government’s intervention of creating a platform for small businesses to be able to produce and sell their products to ultimately create employment within Mahikeng.
As the Mahikeng Trade Market project and the site renovations develop, more information regarding the selection of tenants and operation of the market will become available.
To this end, an advert will be issued in due course, outlining the formal application and selection criteria for tenants to be housed in the Mahikeng Trade Market.
The development of The Trade Market in Mahikeng is aimed at creating a space for SMMEs which have the capacity to manufacture durable and semi-durable goods to produce and sell products both directly to clients and retailers. The Trade Market will provide an enabling environment through the offering of both hard and soft infrastructure for SMMEs that operate within the manufacturing industry.
The Trade Market will act as a facility where SMMEs will have access to public support programmes, such as those offered by SEDA and DSBD. The Trade Market’s operational expenditure will be funded through the rental income charged to SMMEs, which will be used to fund the salaries of employees and maintenance of the facility.
It is envisaged that the Trade Market will consist of a maximum of 22 manufacturing units that will be rented to SMMEs.
The focus of the development will be on mixed manufacturing. The Trade Market will specifically promote the manufacturing of durable and semi-durable goods for home and business use, such as furniture, household textiles and miscellaneous metal products.
The Mahikeng Trade Market will create job opportunities, stimulate the local economy and offer a sustainable business through effective management.
