Turning setbacks into opportunities
In Dinaseng village in the North West, entrepreneur and farmer Pabalelo Mere continues to prove that success in agriculture is not determined by circumstances, but by perseverance, passion, and an unwavering commitment to one’s dream.
He is the founder and owner of Badimo Ba Temothuo (Pty) Ltd.
Pabalelo’s farming journey began long before his business was formally registered in 2022. Inspired by his uncle, who was also a farmer, he developed a love for agriculture at a young age and spent years teaching himself the skills necessary to succeed in mixed farming.
What began as a small informal venture in 2018 has steadily evolved into a promising agricultural enterprise driven by innovation, hard work, and a determination to create opportunities within his community.
Overcoming Adversity
Like many emerging farmers, Pabalelo’s journey has not been without challenges.
A major setback occurred when land earmarked for farming activities was severely damaged by fire, bringing several planned initiatives to an unexpected standstill. For many entrepreneurs this would have been discouraging enough to abandon their plans, but Pabalelo chose a different path.
Instead of giving up, he actively sought assistance and partnerships, continued building his network, and ensured that his business remained visible. His commitment saw him participating in agricultural exhibitions and awareness programmes alongside institutions such as North-West University (NWU) under the faculty of Indigenous Knowledge Systems. The first young farmer to be hosted as an Exhibitor at Homelife China sponsored by the Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation under Heritage and Culture and Mahikeng Local Municipality. He also shared his vision and agricultural journey through interviews with SABC, Motsweding FM, and various local radio stations, helping to raise awareness of his enterprise and its future potential.
Achieving a long-term goal
One of the key aspirations highlighted in Pabalelo’s original business profile was obtaining agricultural land near Disaneng. Today, that vision has become a reality.
Badimo Ba Temothuo has now relocated to Senabolo, Disaneng, where Pabalelo has been granted permission to utilise 30 hectares of land for agricultural development that was inherited land passed on by his grandfather Thatoyaone Mere.
The new site represents a significant milestone in the growth of the business and provides the space required to expand operations substantially. The 10-hectare site will be utilised for the indigenous endorsement of cannabis and hemp.
Current and planned production includes:
- Hemp cultivation
- Spinach production
- Cabbage farming
- Parsley
- Rosemary
- Moringa production
The introduction of moringa has already attracted attention beyond South Africa’s borders. Pabalelo recently revealed that he has been approached by businessmen who has expressed a particular interest in the product. The moringa project is currently progressing well, with the final major milestone being the necessary SABS approval before broader commercial opportunities can be pursued.
Investing in the future
Pabalelo’s commitment to the success of his business is perhaps best demonstrated by the sacrifices he has made to develop the new farming site.
To finance critical infrastructure and operational needs, he made the difficult decision to sell his livestock temporarily. Rather than viewing this as a loss, he saw it as an investment in the future sustainability and growth of the business.
The proceeds have enabled several important developments on the property, including:
- Fencing of the agricultural land
- Debushing and land preparation
- Drilling for water access
- Construction of a storage shelter
The storage facility is being developed with support from SEDFA, while the sale of livestock has assisted in employing local workers to begin the debushing process and support infrastructure development.
These improvements are laying the foundation for a productive and sustainable farming operation capable of supporting future expansion and creating employment opportunities.
A vision becoming reality
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Pabalelo’s story is that he has remained true to the vision he set out years ago.
When his first profile was published, he spoke about acquiring land in Disaneng and expanding his farming operations. Today, despite fires, financial pressures, and numerous obstacles, he has achieved exactly that.
Every challenge encountered has strengthened his resolve and reinforced his belief in the future of South African agriculture.
Once the necessary infrastructure is complete and crop production is fully operational, Pabalelo intends to reintroduce livestock farming as part of his mixed farming model, thereby returning to the balanced agricultural enterprise he originally envisioned.
Looking ahead
The future of Badimo Ba Temothuo is rooted in growth, innovation, and community development.
With land secured, infrastructure development underway, growing market interest in products such as moringa, and a determination to succeed, Pabalelo Mere continues to demonstrate that patience, resilience, and passion can transform challenges into opportunities.
His journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs and farmers across the province.
As Pabalelo himself has always believed: “Patience is a virtue, and love what you do.”
